The many benefits of one way travel insurance
Even if you are only purchasing a one way ticket, you’ll still need travel insurance that will protect you in the event of any type of mishap or accident during your trip. But finding an insurer who offers it can be difficult. Most travel insurance companies require a return date before they will extend a policy offer for coverage and once agreed upon, if you fail to return on that date without prior notice your policy could be considered void. Therefore, if you are flying on a one-way ticket you should look for one way travel insurance.
Traveling one-way is popular
Many travelers who fly one way do so without the benefit of travel insurance. Many just don’t know that purchasing a round-trip ticket is not a prerequisite for obtaining travel insurance, and that some insurance companies do provide coverage for those who are traveling on a single, one-way ticket.
Traveling on a one-way ticket is not uncommon, many people elect to travel this way because they:
- Are seeking employment overseas
- Do not know exactly how long business or family obligations will require them to be away
- Will be vacationing for an extended amount of time
- Will travel to different countries over several months
No matter what the reason is for your one-way trip, you can still find yourself in need of insurance if:
- You experience a medical emergency such as an illness or fall
- Your bags are lost or stolen
- Your trip is canceled or postponed
All of these incidents can be covered with one way travel insurance.
What you should know about one way travel insurance
There are certain rules and requirements that apply to one way travel insurance which include:
- You must inform the insurer that you are traveling on a one-way ticket beforehand – Your insurer will need to know that you are traveling on a one way ticket before you depart, failing to inform them of this can lead to your coverage being dropped
- There may be age limitations – All insurance companies offer insurance based on their own pre-determined age limitations. Be sure to ask what these are upfront.
- You must disclose any pre-existing medical conditions – Just as with any type of travel insurance plan, you must inform the insurer of any health conditions you have before you obtain the policy.
- One way insurance typically expires between 5 to 7 days after you arrive at your destination – Coverage under this type of plan is not offered for long periods of time, so if there is any possibility that you will require coverage for a period of time longer than 5 to 7 days, you should seek a traditional travel insurance plan or purchase insurance offered in your destination country as soon as possible.
