The history, the culture, the shopping… Make the most of your holiday overseas with our guide to the top 5 things to do in London, UK. We’ll help you experience the best the world has to offer.
1. Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace
It’s a classic taste of British royal history, it’s free and it happens at 11.30 every morning in April through July, and every other day in August through March. Enjoy the ceremonial pomp and splendour of this ancient tradition. And if you’re there in August or September, you may be able to view the state rooms of Buckingham Palace as well.
2. Amazing art and ancient artefacts
London has a vast array of free museums and galleries, with collections to suit every taste. Take your time and wander through the Tate Modern, a short walk across the Thames from St Paul’s Cathedral, the British Museum with its world-renowned collection, and the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square.
3. Tower of London
Experience over 1000 years of royal history, see the crown jewels and look for the ghosts of Sir Walter Raleigh and Anne Boleyn. The Tower of London has been a palace, prison, mint and place of execution, and is famous for its yeoman warders (or ‘beefeaters’) and the ravens who protect the tower.
4. Explore the River Thames
You can see the best London offers from the river that winds its way through it. Walking west from Tower Bridge along the south bank, you’ll pass Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, both Tate Galleries, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament and Lambeth Palace. Or take a boat from Charing Cross pier to Greenwich, the Thames Barrier or the Dome.
5. Street markets
London is well known for shopping – from the glitz of Harrods and Selfridges to the wealth of choice on Oxford St. But some of the best shopping experiences are found at London’s many markets. Portobello Rd combines antiques and collectibles with cutting edge new designers. The sprawl of Camden Market has something for just about everyone. And Borough Market, dating back to the 13 th century, is a wonderful place for all kinds of food.
