The sights, the culture, the shopping… Make the most of your holiday overseas with our guide to the top 5 things to do in San Francisco, USA. We’ll help you experience the best the world has to offer.
1. Golden Gate Bridge
When it was opened in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge was the world’s longest and tallest suspension structure – and it’s still the world’s largest single-span bridge. This spectacular landmark has a free pedestrian walkway, from where you can take in amazing views of the city’s skyline. And while you’re in this district, don’t miss the Golden Gate Park – especially its exquisite Japanese Tea Garden.
2. Alcatraz Island
The name Alcatraz may mean ‘pelican’, referring to the island’s original inhabitants, but it’s most famous today as the site of a historic maximum-security prison. Between 1934 and 1963, inmates included Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the ‘Birdman of Alcatraz’. The island has also been home to the US army and the Native American Movement – a fascinating history to discover.
3. Fisherman’s Wharf
Although fishing boats still set out from Fisherman’s Wharf every morning, tourism is now the main industry here – and has been since the 1950s. The Wharf itself consists mainly of shops and seafood restaurants, but this historic area also includes some fascinating museums, such as the Wax Museum and Treasure Island Museum. And for the star attraction, head for Pier 39 with its basking sea lions.
4. Cable cars
Launched in 1873, San Francisco’s cable cars are still the best way to get around the city – as long as you hold on tight! They were invented to solve the practical problem of moving people up and down some hair-raisingly steep slopes, and they’ve since become an essential part of the city’s character.
5. Chinatown
For a dramatic change in atmosphere, walk through the Chinatown Gateway into Grant Avenue. Colourful facades, dragon lampposts and stores with their goods spilling out onto the streets seem authentically oriental – then explore further into the alleys, with their temples, laundries and restaurants.
