A new travel scam
|An email was sent around the 1Cover office this morning that encouraged me to write this blog. I can’t validate if this is a true scenario or not, however it is definitely something travellers should be conscious of – holiday scams.|
The email begins with a fairly normal scenario that I am certain we have all experience at some point on our travels.
You arrive at the check-in desk at the hotel. As per usual the hotel staff member takes your credit card details to put down the room deposit. Once the paper work is finalised you are given the keys and taken to your room to settle in.
Fairly normal so far, right? Well that is all about to change.
Soon after you receive a call from the front desk, you answer the phone with the person on the other end saying:
“This is the front desk, I’m afraid when you checked in we had some difficulty with your credit card information. Would it be possible for you to repeat the details to us?”
Not thinking anything you go to your bag and take out your card and tell the front desk your card details again. You finish the conversation and hang up. Shortly after you notice a significant amount of money being charged to your credit card – you have been scammed.
It turns out it was not the hotel staff from the front desk calling, it was someone who had come to hotel and asked to speak with the guests staying in room 601 (your room). They then proceeded to call you and speak to you in a professionally tone and cunningly suck all the information they need off you.
So this is the apparent new scam that is happening overseas. If you’re a clever traveller this can easily be avoided and this is how:
- Never give your credit card details over the phone,
- Tell the person on the end of the phone that you will go to the front desk personally as you don’t like giving your personal details over the phone.
- Go to the front counter and if it becomes evident that there is a scam scenario immediately inform management of the situation.
- Ask management to monitor the situation.
