Surf the Fiji Pro- A guide to surfing in Fiji

The 2012 Fiji Pro came to an end this week with Kelly Slater emerging as the champion of the surf. Seeing Kelly Slater battle it out with Brazil’s Gabriel Medina inspired me to write a guide to surfing the best of the best in Fiji.

With Fiji being named as one of best surfing beaches in the world, their legendary breaks such as `Swimming Pools’, ‘Restaurants’ and of course, `Cloud Break’ have graced the surfing wall of fame.

What time of year is best for surfing?

Fiji is one of those lucky locations that have year round surfing. However the best waves can be caught during the winter months from April-October. The low pressure systems during these months bring about waves as high as 10 feet.

If however summer is a more ideal month for you then the surfing is still great however the swell has a shorter duration. The summer months are between November and April.

First time surfers

Whilst lessons are available in Fiji for first timers it is not highly recommended. The swell and waves are specifically designed for experienced surfers. If however you are a first timer and wish to experience the waves then Natadola Beach is probably the most ideal location.

What should I bring?

If you want to maximise the waves in Fiji it is recommended that you bring at least three boards.

  1. A short board
  2. A step-up board
  3. Long board

These three boards will allow you to experience all surfing conditions that Fiji has to offer.

Top five waves

If you are going to Fiji then there are five waves you must experience. They are world renowned and will showcase some of the best waves you’ll ever experience.

  1. Cloud break
  2. Restaurant
  3. Natadola Beach
  4. Sigatoka
  5. Frigates
