Doing your insurance homework could save you a great deal of money in the long-term, so it makes sense to look around, compare and gain a greater understanding on general insurance matters and on your specific area of need, whether that be for home and contents, motor vehicle, caravan, life and disability, or travel medical insurance.

The key way to getting good specific and general insurance knowledge in your area of need is by reading the Terms and Conditions in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) on each company's web site. This document should be easy to locate and, by law, easy for you to understand. When reading through our document at 1Cover, should you have any difficulties or questions we encourage you to contact one of our Australia-based Consultants.

General Insurance Tips to Getting it Right

Car Insurance

At the time of taking out insurance, make sure your motor vehicle is insured for the correct market value to ensure you're not disappointed if you need to make a claim. Alternately you can weigh up the value of your car against the cost of premiums and choose either Market or Agreed Value.

Travel Insurance

A key point to understand with travel insurance is that not all medical conditions are covered as standard. It is important you find out exactly what pre-existing medical conditions are covered as standard, which conditions may be covered under special conditions and possibly with an increased premium, and which are simply not covered. Heart disease is often a grey area which may require discussion and confirmation.

This approach also applies to activities and sports you might plan on participating in during your holiday, also in understanding what the insurance company defines as 'unsupervised' luggage or possessions.

Home Insurance

Misunderstandings can occur over 'flood waters', and you need to check the PDS to confirm what water/liquid related damage is covered. Usually it boils down to flood damage due to the river you live beside breaking its banks will not be covered as standard, whereas torrential rain causing drains to overflow and flood your home is covered as standard.

There are a number of aspects across all general insurance areas that have 'points of definition'. We explain these clearly in our PDS because we want to ensure you understand, and are fully confident in, any policy you purchase from 1Cover.
