Community SupportCrime rates differ from one location to the next, and this can of course affect the cost of home insurance. You might think this is unavoidable. But there a range of simple measures you can take to improve the security of your local community... Act as a community The more isolated you are as a household, the more susceptible you are to crime. Why not organise some events and activities with neighbours, such as 'clean-up' afternoons or community gardening? You'll find yourselves looking out for each other a little bit more, and this can deter criminals who often target one street or neighbourhood for a 'burglary blitz'. Don't make it easy for criminals Whether it's stashing a spare set of keys under a plant pot or leaving a bike unlocked, we can all be guilty of little lapses in security. But remember, you won't be the only victim of this. Chances are, if you're targeted as a 'weak link', your neighbours won't have to wait long before they're paid a visit... Shine a light Leave a light or two on when you're away from home, just to give the impression that people are around. The best lights are energy saving bulbs with a built in timer. Once again, this will also lead to a drop in crime in your community. Set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme If you want to make your community solidarity a bit more formal, give Neighbourhood Watch a go. It can be a great way of getting everyone in the community involved and insurance companies like it too! It'll also make things easier when it comes to working with the police on issues of security and deterrence. Team up with the police Small-scale community action might seem like something separate from official police procedures, but that doesn't mean you can't approach your local police station for advice and support. After all, the police always welcome people taking the initiative in these matters, and will probably do what they can to help you improve security. |
