Summary

  • We strongly advise you not to travel to Georgia because of the uncertain security situation. While it has been announced that military operations in Georgia will cease, tensions remain high. The situation remains unpredictable and could deteriorate without notice.
  • If you are in Georgia and concerned for your safety, you should consider leaving. We have received reports that services at Tbilisi airport have resumed. Check the status of flights with your airline before heading to the airport.
  • If you need consular assistance, you can contact the 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre (CEC) on +61 2 6261 3305. Next of kin of Australians in Georgia who are concerned for their safety should register their details with www.smartraveller.gov.au or contact the CEC on 1300 555 135.
  • Australians who remain in Georgia are advised to exercise extreme caution at this time. You should monitor local media and information sources for details of possible new safety or security risks.
  • Unexploded ordnance poses a risk in those areas where fighting has taken place. You should avoid these areas until they are reported cleared.
  • Crime against foreigners, including kidnapping, also remains a serious risk.
  • Australia does not have an Embassy or Consulate in Georgia. The Australian Embassy in Turkey provides consular assistance to Australians in Georgia.
  • Because of the volatile security situation we strongly recommend that you register your travel and contact details with us, so we can contact you in an emergency.
  • Be a smart traveller. Before heading overseas:
    • organise comprehensive travel insurance and check what circumstances and activities are not covered by your policy
    • subscribe to this travel advice to receive free email updates each time it's reissued.
