Summary

  • We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Peru because of the high levels of serious crime.
  • Pay close attention to your personal security and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks.
  • Peru will host the APEC Leaders’ Conference from 16 November to 23 November 2008. See Local Travel for details.
  • Strike action over coming weeks may affect the Cusco-Machu Picchu and the Cusco-Puno rail routes. See under Local Travel for more information.
  • You should avoid any demonstrations and protests throughout Peru given their potential to turn violent.
  • We strongly advise you not to travel to the areas of Peru bordering Colombia because of the risk of kidnapping by narcotics traffickers. We also advise you not to travel to areas bordering Ecuador, other than official border crossings, due to the presence of unexploded ordnance and landmines.
  • Isolated areas in the Southern Highlands including San Martin, Huanuco, Pasco, Junin, Ucayali, Huancavelica, Ayacucho and Apurimac, may still harbour sympathisers of the Shining Path rebel group. Australians should maintain a high level of vigilance in these areas.
  • Be a smart traveller. Before heading overseas:
    • organise comprehensive travel insurance and check what circumstances and activities are not covered by your policy
    • register your travel and contact details, so we can contact you in an emergency
    • subscribe to this travel advice to receive free email updates each time it's reissued.
