Direct Travel Insurance Australia
Which is cheapest? - purchasing travel cover from a travel
agent or
direct travel insurance
?
–
Australia domestic and international or from the travel
insurer?
Some fairly disturbing survey results have been published
recently in an article featured in the Which? Magazine.
Travel agent offerings of
travel insurance
were compared to that of travel insurance direct. In one of
these reviews, it was stated that only 1 in 28 travel agents
who were surveyed checked for pre-existing medical
conditions, or explained what the policy would and would not
cover.
With most travel insurance companies, the people who
actually provide the cover, have set guidelines and many
exclusions for pre-existing medical conditions. When travel
insurance is sold with disregard for pre existing
conditions, it places the travellers concerned under severe
financial stress should they require assistance while
travelling or need to make a subsequent claim.
Further statistics published in a later issue of Which?
revealed consumers making a claim on their holiday travel
insurance to be twice as likely to be dissatisfied if they
had purchased their policy through a travel agent or tour
operator. Given the results indicating the lack of
information provided about the terms and conditions of the
policy, these results may not surprise.

Consumers taking out a quote and purchasing from the insurer
direct will benefit from a
travel insurance direct
discount on their travel policy. The level of discount can
be quite substantial, often in the order of 50% in travel
agent commission when buying travel insurance direct.
Australia based company, 1Cover.com.au, provide cheap cover
direct to consumers, and believe their online saving, as
well as the speed and convenience of their site, has played
a significant role in the growth of consumers purchasing
both single trip and annual trip cover via the internet.
At the end of the day, the key point with travel insurance
is not the original cost but the depth of cover and
reliability of service in an emergency or in making a claim.
From the Which? statistics it appears some travel agents may
not be serving their customers well on either front, making
it important consumers know what to look for.
1Cover recommend the best way for consumers to ensure they
are receiving high quality cover at a budget price is to get
their hands dirty:
compare insurers
, don’t just skim the summary but read the policy documents to get
a full understanding and, if there is anything they don’t understand, to ask questions.
As other costs keep climbing, and as consumers become more
savvy, many are saving money by purchasing direct travel
insurance Australia.
