Travelling alone can be really exciting – it's
easier to meet other people, and you can go wherever you
want. But it also presents a few more risks. So check out
our
top 5 tips for travelling alone.
? We'll help you experience the best the world has to
offer.
Do some research
You'll feel a lot more comfortable and confident
exploring somewhere alone if you've done a bit of
research first. Find out which areas are safer than others,
what things should cost (so people won't take
advantage), and what accommodation is available in
well-populated areas.
Stay in touch
Before you head off on your travels, leave as detailed an
itinerary as possible with friends or family, and try to let
them know how you're getting on at regular intervals.
Not only will it be nice for them to know you're ok,
but staying in contact with people can help you feel less
isolated.
Stay safe
Lone travellers are obviously that little bit more
vulnerable, so take extra care with your money and personal
belongings. Also, avoid discussing your travel plans too
much, and if possible, always try to look like you know
where you're going; if you look as if you know the
area, you'll be a lot safer.
Don't be shy
If you're going away on your own, chances are
you're fairly outgoing anyway. But it's still
worth making that extra effort to make new friends, both
other travellers and local people. It's not just a
question of having fun; if you're in a group,
you're likely to feel (and be) a bit safer too.
Take a good book!
One of the great pleasures of travelling alone is the chance
to get some serious reading done, without ever needing to
seem unsociable! Maybe pick out a book that's set in
the place you're going, or a classic which
you've been meaning to get round to for years. Either
way, it'll be great company.
And for that extra peace of mind, don't forget to sort
out travel insurance before you leave…
