Bring history to life when you travel overseas, with our
guide to historic destinations around the globe
. We'll help you experience the best the world has to
offer.
1. Gallipoli
Gallipoli, in Turkey, is an important part of the itinerary
for many Australians and New Zealanders travelling in
Europe. Both nations lost huge numbers of soldiers in this
ultimately fruitless First World War campaign. Visitors to
Gallipoli today (who usually arrive via Istanbul) can choose
from a variety of informative tours and exhibits, and the
Anzac Day service is an unforgettable experience.
2. Egypt
A country known the world over for its fascinating history
and spectacular heritage sites, Egypt has even more in the
way of historical marvels than many people expect. In fact,
visitors often find themselves more overwhelmed by the
incredible temples at Abu Simbel than by the more famous
pyramids at Cairo.
3. Versailles
The name Versailles refers to a town on the outskirts of
Paris, but immediately conjures up images of the phenomenal
palace there - the official residence of French
royalty from 1682. And of course, for history buffs, the
location's interest stretches beyond French monarchs,
as Versailles was also where the famous peace treaty was
signed, to end the First World War.
4. The Cambodian 'killing fields'
Between 1975 and 1979, Cambodia's Khmer Rouge regime
executed at least 200,000 people, while up to ten times as
many are thought to have died as a direct result of their
brutal policies. Visiting the site of these atrocities can
be a harrowing experience, but an important one as well
- acting as a vivid reminder of one of the 20
th
century's lesser known horrors.
5. The American Civil War
Although tourists can and do visit the sites of famous
battles, such as Gettysburg and Antietam, what is often even
more interesting is to discover how the war affected
lesser-known places throughout the country. It's also
fascinating to see how the conflict still divides opinion
today - head to Virginia or Texas, and you might still
hear it referred to as 'The War of Northern
Aggression'!
