From the Alps down to its sun-drenched 'toe',
Italy has a wealth of art, culture, history, and natural
beauty. And then there's the food. To make your
holiday overseas a memorable one, check out
our guide to the top 5 things to do in Italy
.
1. Venice
'Queen of the Adriatic', 'City of
Light', 'City of Bridges'…Venice is
all these things, yet can't really be described in
words. It's small in size, but discovering and
exploring Venice is an endless, fascinating journey. The
city's canals enclose untold treasures, but the real
joy is just moving through it all, breathing in the mystery
and wonder of the world's most beautiful (and fragile)
city.
2. Pompeii
For 1700 years Pompeii was lost and forgotten, but
it's made up for it since. Probably the world's
most famous archaeological site, Pompeii is visited by 2.5
million people every year. Our advice is to ignore the
crowds and go. The sudden onslaught of the volcano captured
the last moments of the city's inhabitants, creating a
moving, incredibly detailed record of how these people
lived. An unforgettable experience.
3. Milan
Yes, beyond all the culture and history is the style. The
fashion and design sense of the Milanese is second-to-none.
The oldest shopping mall in the world is here, and
you'll need a heavy wallet to properly enjoy
Milan's Fashion District. The annual Milan Design Week
is a must for international design trends.
4. Cinque Terre
These five incredibly pretty villages near Genoa are linked
by train (partly through a tunnel) and boat (but not
stopping at all five), so the best way to see them is by
foot. The path can be steep, but it winds through vineyards
and olive groves, and the views are constantly spectacular.
As a reward for all the walking, the food and hospitality in
each village are well worth it.
5. Lake Como
Things have come a long way for Lake Como since the last Ice
Age, when it was a slow moving glacier. Now it's
dotted with lavish villas and charming towns, just near the
Swiss border. The lake itself is perfect for sailing,
windsurfing and kitesurfing.
No matter where you go in Italy, make sure you're
covered with travel insurance. Then you can relax and enjoy
the hospitality. Bellissimo!
