All roads lead to Rome, one of Italy's top travel
destinations. This extraordinary city has a wealth of
history and a love of living in the moment. Start your Roman
Holiday with our
guide to the top 5 things to do in Rome –
we'll help you make the most of your overseas trip.
1.
Walk through Ancient Rome
Starting at the Piazza del Campidoglio, built by
Michelangelo, head south-east. You'll pass the Roman
Forum, once the epicentre of world power, and the infamous
Colosseum. Turning right, then first left, you'll find
the ruins of Circus Maximus, where chariot races would
entertain crowds of up to quarter of a million people.
2.
Step inside the Pantheon
This beautiful structure has been one Rome's most
visited buildings for 2,000 years. With its unique open
dome, the Pantheon was designed by the emperor Hadrian and
is still a marvel of engineering.
3.
Eat.
One word is all you need. Eating well (and much) is the
Roman way of life, whether it's in a simple trattoria
or a sumptuous dining room. Every area of central Rome is
littered with good, cheap places to eat. Non-vegetarians
should try the Roman specialty
porchetta
- pork spit-roasted with herbs and wild fennel. Delicioso!
4.
Cycle in the Villa Borghese
Escape the busy streets of the city for the tranquil park of
the Villa Borghese, which runs across the north of Rome. The
best way to experience it is on a bicycle, ambling past the
museums, galleries and grassy amphitheatre, before visiting
the park's private zoo, which has a focus on
conservation and houses some remarkable rare animals.
5.
Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain
If you enjoyed this holiday so much that you want to come
back, all you'll have to do is toss a coin into this
famous fountain – or so the tradition goes. At the
very least, your money will go to a deserving charity when
collected by the city's water company at the end of
the week. This huge baroque fountain is perfect for people
watching and soaking up the energy of the city.
And don't forget your travel insurance… so you
can really relax into the Italian way of life.
