1. Castillo de Santa Barbara
So called because it was captured from the Moors by Prince
Alfonso of Castile on the feast day of St. Barbara, this is
one of the largest mediaeval fortresses in Europe. Atop
Bencanti Hill in Alicante, its strategic mountain position
offers stunning views of the town and bay.
2. Alhambra, Granada
Alhambra, or ‘the red one’, is a palace and
fortress complex in
Granada
, in the south east of Spain. Built by the Moors in the 14
th
century, it’s an impressive example of Spanish Islamic
architecture, and has been a World Heritage Site since 1984.
One of its many beautiful features is the intricately
arabesque stonework on the inside of the main dome.
3. The Pamplona Bull Run
Pamplona, historical capital of the Basque region in
Northern Spain, hosts the San Fermin festival every year
from 6
th
-14
th
July. Its most famous event, and one of the things Pamplona
is famous for, is the Bull Run. Anyone can take part in
being chased through the streets, with only a rolled up
newspaper to try and divert the rampaging bulls’
attention. You might want to check your insurance to make
sure you’re covered for this!
4. The Balearics
Ibiza, Menorca, Mallorca and Formentera are popular holiday
islands in the western Mediterranean, off Spain’s
eastern coast. Their popularity lies in sun, sea, sand, and
a buzzing club scene in most resorts. That said, the islands
also offer tranquil beaches, pleasant coastal walks and
plenty of low-fat Mediterranean cuisine, such as lobster
stew and unsalted bread, plus inexpensive quality wines.
5. Barcelona
Cosmopolitan Barcelona is an unforgettable place. Among its
most popular attractions are the Sagrada Familia – a
breathtaking cathedral that’s been under construction
since 1882, and the tranquil Park Guell. And you won’t
miss La Rambla, the city’s main pedestrianised street
that comes to life as the sun goes down, with music,
performance arts and endless cafes, bars and restaurants.
