Destination: Tokyo

It's hard to believe Tokyo was a small fishing village until 500 years ago. Now it's one of the world's most vibrant cities, and a highlight of any trip to Japan. Make the most of your holiday overseas with our guide to the top 5 things to do in Tokyo. Best of all, these activities are either free or low-cost.

1. Visit Tsukiji Fish Markets

Think of Japanese culture as quiet and refined? You haven't seen the world's largest fish markets in full swing. With 2,000 tons of fish changing hands every day, Tsukiji is a sensory rollercoaster for the ears, nose and eyes and tongue! When you've had enough of the frantic pace, sit down to the freshest sashimi on the planet.

2. Hang out on Jingu – bashi

This small bridge at the top of Tokyo's funkiest fashion strip is where, every Sunday morning, the city's most eclectic young folk strut their stuff. Decked out in hand made costumes, the weekly parade is like a group convention for nursery rhyme, B-grade horror and sci-fi characters. Don't feel shy about snapping their pictures; the kids are there for your attention!

3. Stand in the middle of Shibuya Crossing

You'll probably recognise it from countless ads and films – an enormous five sided, neon drenched pedestrian crossing in the middle of Tokyo's commercial district. Nothing beats the thrill of standing in the middle of the world's busiest intersection. Get there at the end of the working day, when literally thousands of pedestrians race by you, with not one seeming to run into another!

4. Relax at Meiji Shrine

In the middle of the frantic bustle stands a beautiful Shinto shrine, nestled in 175 acres of park. As you stroll down the wide tree lined paths towards the shrine, the noise falls away and you're left – for an hour at least – to reflect.

5. A day trip to Fuji

This much photographed snow capped peak is visible from more positions in the city than you'd imagine. Mt Fuji is easily accessible from the city, and if you're feeling active you can take a climb. But be warned – it last erupted 300 years ago, but Fuji is an active volcano!
