What is Domestic Travel Insurance?

Domestic Travel Insurance is designed for trips taken within Australia. Unlike many other providers, 1Cover offers protection for domestic trips when you’re travelling only 100KM away from your home.

Domestic travel insurance covers you for things like trip cancellation, rental car excess, losing your luggage and family emergencies. However, it’s important to note that domestic travel insurance doesn’t cover medical expenses.

Looking for Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance?

When you hire a car in Australia, if your rental vehicle is involved in an accident, is damaged, or is stolen, you could be liable to pay thousands of dollars for the rental car excess charged by your hire car company.

Don’t get fleeced by your hire car company, visit carhireexcess.com.au

Covers all eligible age drivers on your rental vehicle agreement and you can reduce your excess to $0.

FAQs: domestic Travel Insurance

  • Why do i need Domestic Travel Insurance?
  • Travelling within your home country may be easier in some ways than travelling overseas, but plenty of things can still go wrong. Your items can still get damaged or stolen. You still might need to cancel your trip, you might need to go home early if a family member is unwell, or your rental vehicle might get stolen or damaged.

  • What constitutes as a domestic trip?
  • Unlike many other insurers, 1Cover offers domestic cover for trips that are only 100KM away from your home.

  • What if I take frequent domestic trips around Australia?
  • If you take frequent Domestic Trips, you might want to consider a Frequent Traveller Policy. This is a convenient way to save time and potentially money, if you travel regularly around Australia. Find out more about Annual or Frequent Traveller policies.

  • Does Domestic Cover include Medical Assistance?
  • While you are in Australia, we are unable to cover any domestic medical expenses. As a travel insurer, we can't take the place of health insurance. There is legislation in place to prevent this. If you are an Australian permanent resident or citizen, you will likely have access to Medicare or your private health insurance.

  • Do seniors qualify for Domestic Insurance?
  • We offer cover for all ages. Depending on your age, we may require a little more information, and certain exclusions may apply. See our Seniors Travel Insurance page for more details.

  • Are there any exclusions for Domestic Cover?
  • Domestic medical expenses are excluded, as well as a list of general exclusions that are listed in the PDS. These general exclusions include, but are not limited to: not acting in a responsible way to protect yourself, being intoxicated, or breaking the law. See the PDS for the full list.

  • Does Domestic travel insurance cover adventure activities?
  • 1Cover provides coverage for 100+ activities. While any medical costs arising from domestic activities can’t be covered, you may be covered for if you need to forfeit pre-paid fees or deposits if you're unable to travel. The reason we can’t cover medical costs is that we can't take the place of domestic health insurance. There is legislation in place to prevent this.

  • Are kids covered for free on domestic policies?
  • Dependants are covered for no extra cost, so you have added peace of mind when you take the kids and grandkids and see what Australia has to offer. Please note that dependant children are classed as under 19 and travelling with their parents or grandparents for their whole trip. Please see the PDS for limits and exclusions, as well as all terms and conditions.

  • Are events like bushfires covered?
  • Travel is unpredictable, even in Australia. Your journey could be delayed by events outside of your control - like weather or bushfires -  so we provide cover for additional accommodation and meal expenses.

  • Is There An Excess On My Domestic Travel Insurance?
  • There is a $200 excess that is applicable per event per claim.

  • Am I Covered if i’m taking a domestic cruise?
  • If you are travelling in Australian waters on a cruise liner you will need to purchase our Cruise Pack add-on with your policy, selecting 'Australia Cruise' for your region.

This will ensure you are covered for emergency medical assistance and emergency medical and hospital cover, cancellations, missed departure and more. See our Cruise Travel Insurance page for more information.

  • Do I Still Need Rental Vehicle Insurance?
  • Please be aware the rental vehicle excess benefit does not take the place of Rental Vehicle insurance. You have provision to claim for a reimbursement of up to $5,000 (unless you have opted to increase your excess) for any excess or deductible which you become legally liable to pay under your Rental Vehicle hiring agreement, if the Rental Vehicle is involved in an accident while you are driving, or is damaged or stolen while in your custody.
