Huge passport demand leads to surge in claims

04/12/2023 - Media Release

A new Australian consular report revealed a whopping 168% rise in lost passports and emergency replacements, reflecting unprecedented travel demand.

New data from the Australian government reveals an ‘unprecedented’ demand for passports in 2023 and a whopping 168% surge in lost and stolen passports.

According to the latest DFAT consular assistance report, at least 10,000 emergency passports were issued over the 2022-23 period with a whopping 3,621 passports reported lost or stolen overseas. A record breaking 3.1 million new passports were also issued, more than doubling the previous year’s numbers.

Natalie Smith, spokesperson for 1Cover Travel Insurance, says that the growing number of lost and stolen passports reflected the surge in demand for international travel.

“Lost and stolen passports have more than doubled this year, with so many travellers keen to explore the world again. From our end, we know that missing travel documents can cause significant trouble to those abroad and we urge our customers to be vigilant and keep a close eye on their belongings at all times.”

Smith notes that while many policies vary, in many cases, passport loss or damage is covered by travel insurance.

“If your travel documents are lost or stolen, travel insurance can help to recoup the fees to replace them, along with any additional out-of-pocket expenses. For example, if you miss a flight because you’re not allowed to board due to a damaged passport, travel insurance may cover the cost for your additional travel expenses.”

Smith says that passport guidelines will depend on your destination.

“Bear in mind, each country’s levels of acceptable passport damage will vary.

Sometimes a small rip can be enough to refuse entry. Others are more relaxed as long as the identification page is intact and there is at least one page left to stamp.”

What to do if you lose your passport overseas

Smith says that travellers who have lost or damaged their passports can usually get a new one reissued within a few days, however, this will depend on your circumstances.

“If you’ve lost your passport, or it’s too damaged to use, contact your local Australian embassy as soon as possible to issue you with an emergency passport. Note that this is usually only a temporary document and will come with certain restrictions.”

Lastly Smith advises travellers to make sure they make preparation well ahead of their travels and take care with all valuable documents and items.

“Your passport is an incredibly valuable document and should be treated as such.”

“Have a good look through it once you’ve booked your airfares and take note of any potential damages. When travelling, always keep it within reach or in a locked security box. While travel insurance can help in certain instances, it’s really up to you to look after your belongings.”

Passport travel tips

Check for damage: Even a small rip or tear can be a problem in some countries.

Check for expiry dates: Six months until expiry is usually required for travel.

Check visas: Ensure you have adequate visas for travelling and they are also intact and not damaged.

Research embassies and consulates before you leave: This will come in very handy if you find yourself in trouble.

Leave a photocopy of your passport behind: Leave a photocopy of your passport with someone you trust back home before you go overseas.

Take photos of your important documents: Having digital copies of your travel documents is always a good idea. If you are out and about, keep your documents locked in a safe and only take the digital version out with you.
