Easter hotspots-where Aussies are travelling

16/06/2025 - Media Release

Aussies travelled in droves over Easter- despite the cost of living and global currency fluctuations, indicating that for many Australians, travel is still worth the splurge.

Aussies packed their bags in greater numbers over the April school holidays this year, according to 1Cover Travel Insurance. The top three international hotspots over the Easter break were Bali, Japan, and the USA, while domestic travel also saw a boost, with 1Cover recording a 10% jump in homegrown policy sales compared to the same time last year.

The findings correlated with data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) indicating that Aussies were travelling more in 2025 compared to the previous year. The rise in travel has been widely linked to lower airfares, growing confidence in international travel and the flexibility of remote work.

Natalie Ball, Chief Operating Officer for 1Cover Travel Insurance, says travel demand is expected to remain strong leading into the July school holidays.

“If the Easter break is anything to go by, Australians are set to take full advantage of the mid-year break. We’re already seeing strong interest in both domestic and international cover. This steady increase in traveller numbers suggests that Australians are continuing to prioritise travel despite rising costs and an unpredictable exchange rate.”

Destinations predicted to rise

Ball says that Aussies are continuing to seek out affordable travel destinations not far from home.

“Bali and Japan remain popular, but looking ahead, we’re seeing growing interest in destinations like China, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore. There’s also been a notable rise in travel to European countries such as Portugal, Austria, and Croatia, as Aussies venture further afield to seek the sun. This trend reflects a shift away from heavily trafficked hotspots, with travellers seeking out less crowded, emerging destinations in response to concerns around overtourism in recent years.”

Ball notes that looking forward to the July school holidays, domestic travel remained high across all demographics.
“Domestic policies are notably high for the mid-year period, with major sporting events, such as the Rugby Lions game, attracting travellers of all ages. We’re also seeing a lot of younger travellers headed to Europe for the summer as well.”

Cruises pick up speed

As cruising continues to win over Aussie travellers, 1Cover Travel Insurance reports a growing demand for international cruise holidays.

“While domestic cruising and cruises in the Pacific remain strong, we are seeing a surge in Europe, Asia and North American cruises, in addition to cruises with Canada, Alaska and even Antarctica itineraries,” notes Ball.

In 2024, 1Cover Travel Insurance recorded an increase in cruise policy sales, reinforcing cruising’s reputation as a cost-effective and hassle-free way to explore the world.

“Cruising continues to hold strong appeal for a wide range of travellers, from families to retirees. With everything bundled into one experience, cruising offers exceptional value, especially at a time when travellers are looking to make every dollar count.”

What else the data tells us

Beyond destinations, 1Cover Travel Insurance has observed shifts in how Australians are buying travel insurance.

The insurer reports stronger early uptake of policies ahead of the July school holidays, as more travellers recognise the advantages of securing cover well in advance.

“People are becoming more insurance-savvy,” says Ball. “We’re seeing fewer last-minute purchases and more customers proactively tailoring their cover to suit their specific trip. There seems to be a growing awareness that travel insurance can make all the difference when things go wrong.”
