Watching acrobats soar from dizzying heights into a shallow pool below all while on a moving ship is truly remarkable.

It’s worth noting that many of the largest ships in the world are Royal Caribbean vessels, dominating the top of the list with their Oasis and Icon Class ships. Their scale, entertainment options and innovative designs have set the standard for what modern cruising can be.

Why are mega cruise ships so popular?

Having sailed on both Wonder of the Seas and MSC World Europa, I can confidently say that mega cruise ships are truly floating cities – and both blew me away.

At the time of my voyage in 2022, Wonder of the Seas was the biggest cruise ship in the world, and at first, I was quite intimidated. One thing is for sure: you definitely get your steps up traversing the decks. A favourite memory was wandering Central Park. It felt like stepping into a lush, outdoor oasis – amazing when you remember you’re actually on a man-made ship. The AquaTheater shows were hands down the best shows I’ve ever seen at sea.

And while I don’t like calling favourites, my time aboard MSC World Europa, with its sleek design and innovative LPG technology - that has now set the standard for sustainable cruising -  offered a different kind of luxury.

My ‘cruise’ didn’t actually go anywhere! I was invited to experience the ship’s Naming Ceremony in Doha, Qatar – the most remarkable cruise event I’ve ever attended. The stunningly appointed spacious public areas, top-tier dining venues, and a futuristic promenade were both elegant and exciting. The week I spent on board World Europa was one of my best sea memories and will live on in my mind for a very long time.

Should I book a mega cruise?

Beyond size, these mega ships redefine cruising. The multiple neighbourhoods or zones with unique themes mean cruisers are always discovering something new – you’re never, ever bored on board.

The ‘fun’ extras are state of the art (think water slides, surf simulators and zip lines). Shows and live entertainment are world-class and the various dining option mean you’re served an array of cuisines to suit every palate.

From Icon of the Seas to MSC World Europa, sailing on one of these vessels is an adventure in itself, whether you’re seeking thrills, relaxation or a little bit of both. The ship really is the destination.

If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend experiencing a mega ship firsthand. They’re more than just floating cities, but adventure-packed playgrounds at sea, where every deck holds a new thrill that creates moments you’ll never forget.

Mega ships are more than transportation, they’re destinations in their own right, offering unforgettable experiences for travellers of all ages. With larger, bolder and more innovative ships entering service, the future of cruising is bigger and brighter than ever.
