Planning a trip to Australia’s Northern Territory? This 7-day itinerary covers all the highlights — from Darwin’s tropical charm and the waterfalls of Litchfield, to the ancient landscapes of Kakadu, Katherine Gorge, and the iconic beauty of Uluru. Whether you're chasing waterfalls, exploring Aboriginal culture, or soaking in natural hot springs, this self-drive adventure combines local insights with unforgettable outback experiences. Get ready for one epic week in the Top End and Red Centre.
The ideal time to embark on this 7-day Northern Territory itinerary is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, you’ll experience:
Clear skies and mild temperatures (20–30°C)
Low humidity and minimal rainfall — perfect for hiking, swimming, and road tripping
Open access to major parks and waterfalls, many of which are closed or restricted during the wet season
Best wildlife viewing, especially crocodiles and birdlife in places like Kakadu and along billabongs
While you can travel in the wet season (October to April), be prepared for high heat, humidity, heavy rain, and potential road closures — especially to remote sites like Jim Jim Falls or Surprise Creek. That said, the wet season brings lush landscapes, dramatic skies, and fewer crowds, so it can still be a unique experience if you're well prepared.
For the best combination of accessibility, comfort, and stunning natural beauty, June to August is the peak travel window.
This 7-day Northern Territory itinerary is best done as a self-drive road trip, giving you the freedom to explore national parks, remote waterfalls, and cultural sites at your own pace.
Travelling the Northern Territory in a camper van is a fantastic way to experience the freedom and rugged beauty of the outback while keeping accommodation and transport simple. With well-maintained roads, plenty of campgrounds, and scenic overnight spots near national parks, a camper lets you stay close to nature without sacrificing comfort. Key locations like Litchfield, Kakadu, and Katherine offer both powered and unpowered sites, some with amenities and others more remote and peaceful. You'll need to book in advance during peak dry season (especially in Kakadu), and make sure your van is 4WD-capable if you plan to explore off-the-beaten-track places like Jim Jim Falls or Surprise Creek. For Uluru, you can park and stay at the Ayers Rock Campground in Yulara, which is part of the main resort hub. Just be sure to stock up on fuel, food, and water regularly — distances are long and services can be few and far between.
Hire a van in Darwin: A standard 2WD is fine for most stops including Litchfield, Kakadu, and Katherine. However, if you want to access places like Maguk, Jim Jim Falls, or Surprise Creek, a 4WD is essential.
Driving Distances
Darwin to Litchfield: ~1.5 hours
Darwin to Kakadu (Cooinda): ~3 hours
Kakadu to Katherine: ~3.5 hours
