spain Travel Insurance FAQs

  • Will You Pay My Hospital Bills If I get Sick Or Injured In spain?
  • Please refer to the PDS and policy schedule and check if your sickness or injury is a claimable event and is covered. If you are hospitalised, or if you are treated as an outpatient, or if the total cost of the treatment will exceed $1000, please contact our emergency assistance service as soon as possible to obtain their prior approval.

In circumstances where the claim is approved, we can then provide written guarantees of payment of reasonable expenses for emergency hospitalisation that may be required while you are in Spain.

  • Can I Apply To Extend My Travel Insurance Policy While I’m Away?
  • Yes, if you want to extend your policy while you’re in Spain, the easiest way to do this is via the Policy Manager.
You'll need your policy number (available in the email confirming your policy), and a few other simple details. Log-in and extend your trip, add destinations, or buy add ons/extras.

Make sure you extend your policy before it expires (please keep in mind Australian AEST/AEDT).

If you have trouble, you can email us at [email protected]

Please note there may be instances where a policy extension is not available.

  • What Do I Do If I'm robbed In spain?
  • If you are robbed while you’re in Spain, you should report the theft to the police or nearest local authority immediately. You will also need to obtain a written report to be used as supporting documents for your claim

  • I’m in spain and the airline has lost my luggage. What Do I Do?
  • If you are entitled to be reimbursed by the bus line, airline, shipping line or rail authority you were travelling on when the loss, theft, misplacement or damage occurred, then your travel insurance may not cover you.

However, if you are not reimbursed the full amount of your claim, we will assess your claim and you may be entitled to be paid the difference between the amount of your loss and what you were reimbursed, up to the limit of your cover (allowing for depreciation due to age, wear and tear). Learn more about what to do if you have a travel incident.

  • Do Reciprocal Health agreements apply in spain?
  • No, Australia has reciprocal health care agreements with some countries in Europe, Spain is not one of these countries. Reciprocal health care agreements provide health care in some circumstances, but will not cover all health care needs - in particular emergency assistance and repatriation, costs of medicines and dental care. Find out more here.

  • Do i need a visa for spain?
  • If you are planning to visit any of the countries in the Schengen Area, including Spain, for more than 90 days within a 180-day period, you will need to obtain a visa. If you are travelling for a purpose other than business, visiting friends and family, tourism or a holiday, participating in a cultural or sports event, necessary transit, an official visit, medical reasons, such as surgery or another treatment, short-term study, or research you will need to obtain a visa. Read our full guide here.

  • What Do I Do If I'm pick pocketed In spain?
  • Pick pocketing is a big issue in some major cities in Spain. You should take precautions to avoid your belongings being taken from your bags or pockets. Consider investing in anti-theft bags and do not get distracted from your items.
If the worst happens and bank notes, cash, currency notes, postal orders or money orders are stolen from your person, while you’re on holiday, you should report the theft to the police or nearest local authority immediately. You will also need to obtain a written report to be used as supporting documents for your claim.

  • I’m Travelling To Multiple Countries other than spain. Do I Need To List All My Destinations?
  • When you apply for a policy you need to tell us where you are travelling to. The premium you pay for the policy depends on your destination(s).

If you're travelling to multiple countries, you need to nominate the countries when you are applying for cover.

If you’re going on a cruise, you must select the appropriate cruise region for where you are travelling and pay an additional premium for travel on a cruise vessel by purchasing the Cruise Pack. If you don't purchase a cruise pack, you won't be covered while on the ship. There is, however, no cover under any sections of the policy when you are on a cargo ship or freighter.

  • Can I Choose My Excess?
  • Yes, if you choose a lower excess, it means you'll pay less if you need to claim, but you'll pay a little bit more upfront.

  • I travel to spain a few times a year. What’s the best policy for me?
  • We have a policy called Frequent Traveller which allows you to take as many trips under the one policy for 12 months and enjoy comprehensive cover on each one. There is a limit to the maximum length of each trip on these policies. You can travel to one or more destinations with this policy.

Find out more about our annual travel insurance policies here.

  • Can I Get Extra Cover For My High-Value Items?
  • Laptop computers, cameras, mobile phones…they’re all things we need on at home and on holiday. That’s why you can choose a bit of extra protection for your can’t-live-withouts. All you need to do is include and specify certain high-value items that aren't automatically covered when you're buying your policy.

Note: the items cannot be older than 12 month, and you can't specify items like jewellery, watches, bicycles and watercraft (apart from surfboards).

  • What Happens If I Encounter Terrorism Or Political Unrest In spain?
  • In the event of a terrorist attack or political unrest, there is no cover for cancellation fees and lost deposits, disruption of journey or alternative transport expenses.

However, if you do get caught up in an unforeseen event while you are in Spain and you are injured, cover is available for all necessary medical/hospital expenses.

Why visit spain?

Spain

1. Rich History & CultureFrom ancient Roman ruins to Moorish palaces and Gothic cathedrals, Spain offers a deep dive into European history. Aussies, often fascinated by Old World charm, are drawn to places like the Alhambra in Granada, the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, and the Royal Palace in Madrid.

2. Vibrant Food & Wine Scene: Spain is a culinary paradise, famous for tapas, paella, jamón ibérico, and world-class wines. Australians, who value quality food and wine, will appreciate regional specialities and vibrant food markets across the country.

3. World Famous Festivals: Whether it’s La Tomatina, the Running of the Bulls, or Semana Santa, Spain’s festivals are colourful, lively, and unforgettable. These experiences offer something completely different from typical Aussie celebrations.

4. Beautiful Coast Lines and Beaches: From the Costa del Sol to the Balearic Islands (like Ibiza and Mallorca), Spain offers sun-soaked coastlines and Mediterranean charm. For Aussies who love the beach lifestyle, Spain provides a unique, European version of coastal living.

5. Affordable Travel & Easy Euro Access: Compared to other Western European destinations, Spain is relatively affordable for accommodation, food, and transport. It’s also well-connected to the rest of Europe, making it a strategic hub for Aussies doing multi-country trips.

spain travel tips and safety information

Planning a trip to Spain? From world-famous beaches to historic cities and lively festivals, Spain is a top destination for travellers from around the world. Here’s what you need to know about Spain and travel insurance for Spain before you go.

Climate

Spain enjoys a diverse climate, making it a year-round destination. The south and Mediterranean coast (including regions like Andalusia and Costa del Sol) experience hot, dry summers and mild winters. Northern Spain, including Galicia and the Basque Country, is cooler and greener, with more rainfall. In central areas like Madrid, expect hot summers and colder winters.

Travel tip: Pack for the region and season you're visiting. Travel insurance may help cover weather-related travel journey disruptions, particularly during summer heatwaves or unexpected storms.

Culture and Language

Spain has a rich cultural tapestry shaped by its regions. From flamenco in Seville to modernist art in Barcelona, every area offers something unique. Spanish is the official language, but regional languages like Catalan, Galician, and Basque are also widely spoken.

Travel tip: Learning a few Spanish phrases goes a long way.

Getting Around

Spain has an excellent transport system. High-speed trains (Renfe AVE) connect major cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia. Metro systems and buses are reliable and affordable in most urban areas. For exploring rural or coastal regions, car rental is a great option.

Travel tip: If you plan to rent a car, consider adding rental vehicle excess cover to your travel insurance, accidents or damages on Spanish roads can lead to high out-of-pocket costs.

Safety

Spain is generally a very safe country for tourists, especially in well-frequented tourist areas like Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Valencia. Violent crime is rare, but like any popular destination, petty theft and lost belongings can occur—particularly in crowded areas or public transport.

Travel tip: Keep an eye on your belongings in busy spots. With the right Spain travel insurance, you’re covered for stolen or lost items, medical emergencies, and certain travel disruptions.

Entry Requirements

For most travelers from  Australia, entry into Spain for tourism purposes of up to 90 days does not require a visa. However, passports must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date. We reccommend always having a 6 month validity on your passport when you travel.

From mid-2025, non-EU travelers may also need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization before entering Spain. This has yet to be finalised so keep abreast of the latest information.

Travel tip: Always check current entry requirements before departure.
